What are the most dangerous roads in Albuquerque?

Albuquerque is a thriving metropolitan area. It is one of the busiest urban centers in New Mexico. As such, it has some of the most dangerous roads in the state.

Drivers in Albuquerque may unknowingly put themselves and the other occupants of their vehicles at risk of major collisions by driving on roads that see far more collisions than other streets. Motorists who are familiar with where crash risk is highest can potentially limit their risk of causing a crash or ending up hurt by the bad choices of others in traffic.

What roads have the highest risk of major collisions in the Albuquerque area?

Many of the most dangerous roads are highways

The deadliest road in Albuquerque is Central Avenue. Specifically, the stretch between San Mateo Blvd. SE and Dorado Pl. SE. Between 2017 and 2019, this stretch of road saw 15 deadly collisions. The stretch of Central Ave. between 1st Street SW and Volcano Road saw five traffic deaths during the same period. Gibson Blvd SE between Valencia Drive SE and Broadstone Way also made the list with six fatal wrecks.

All of the other roads with high levels of fatal crashes were highways. SR-45, I-25 and I-40 all had stretches that saw multiple deaths during those years. I-40 had two stretches that had high crash rates. The stretch between Exit 154 and Exit 158 saw 10 fatalities, while the stretch between Exit 140 and Lost Horizon Drive NW had six fatal collisions with seven total deaths over the three years analyzed.

Similarly, the section of SR-45 between Redlands Road NW and Central Avenue SW saw nine crashes, while the segment between Kirsten Rd. SW and Huseman Pl. SW was the site of five traffic deaths. SR-118 was most dangerous between Navajo Blvd and Rehoboth Dr, where eight fatalities occurred. On I-25, the most dangerous section was between Exits 232 and 226A, where six people died.

Avoiding roads with high levels of fatal car crashes and employing extra care when driving on them are both beneficial practices. Drivers who are aware of the factors that increase their cash risk can take steps to protect themselves and to respond appropriately if a wreck occurs.
